Healing, compassion and Catholic identity are integral to the mission of the Sisters of Mercy New York, Pennsylvania, Pacific West Community. These values are realized through various ministries and association with Catholic Health East, a multi-institutional Catholic health system of which we are one of 10 sponsors. Our ministries include Catholic Health System of Buffalo, Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, St. James Mercy Health System in Hornell, N.Y., Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and DuBois Regional Medical Center in DuBois, Pa. Our Philippine healthcare ministries are Mercy Community Hospital and Mercy Mobile Clinic.
Catholic Health System of Buffalo is a non-profit healthcare system that provides care residents of Western New York via a network of hospitals, primary care centers, imaging centers and other community ministries. Two of the hospitals in the system have Mercy connections: Mercy Hospital, Buffalo, and Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Kenmore, N.Y. Formed in 1998, the Sisters of Mercy New York, Pennsylvania, Pacific West Community are among the sponsors of Catholic Health System, which endeavors to live daily the values of reverence, compassion, justice and excellence.
Pittsburgh Mercy Health System (PMHS) provides a wide range of community-based services. Mercy Behavioral Health offers a full continuum of recovery-oriented, mental health, mental retardation, and drug/alcohol treatment and prevention services. Operation Safety Net is locally and internationally renowned for street-medicine. A Child’s Place at Mercy provides care to children who are suspected of having been abused or neglected. Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry assists churches in starting a nd sustaining volunteer health ministry programs that serve the congregation. Since the programs of PMHS are oftentimes outside the ordinary limits of health insurance, PMHS Development is dedicated to securing charitable gifts. McAuley Ministries, the grantmaking arm of PMHS, reaches out to Pittsburgh neighborhoods traditionally served by the Sisters of Mercy and their sponsored ministries in southwestern Pennsylvania.
For more than a century, St. James Mercy Health System has provided health care services to residents in the Hornell, N.Y., area. It is comprised of St. James Mercy Hospital, McAuley Manor at Mercycare long-term care facility, and various clinics throughout the rural service area. Faithful to the heritage of the Sisters of Mercy, St. James Mercy Health System is a community of persons committed to being a transforming, healing presence within the rural communities they serve, particularly addressing the needs of the poor, underserved and disadvantaged.
Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., started in 1955. Four years later, Sisters of Mercy from Pittsburgh began their ministry there. Today, Sisters of Mercy serve as nurses, chaplains and administrators. They also spend time visiting patients and families during their hospital stay. The hospital maintains state-of-the-art technology, a highly-acclaimed medical staff and innovative services to provide health care for the entire family.
DuBois Regional Medical Center, DuBois, Pa., likes to refer to itself as “the best of modern health care technology, plus the best of small-town America!” The Sisters of Mercy, based in Titusville, Pa., started DuBois Hospital in 1910, the same year that the nearby Maple Avenue Hospital opened its doors. Both hospitals combined their efforts in 1985 to become DuBois Regional Medical Center. Today, the west campus on Hospital Avenue houses acute patient care, Heart Center, Hahne Cancer Center, Neo-natal Intensive Care Center, Women’s Health Center of DuBois and a full range of ancillary services. The east campus on Maple Ave. focuses on outpatient services, and adult and adolescent behavioral health units. While the Sisters of Mercy no longer own the DuBois Hospital, they continue their mission by serving as board members.
Mercy Community Hospital in Iligan City on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines was started in 1977 out of a desire to help the desperate health needs of people. Mercy Sisters Rose Palacio, Caritas Quinn and Julpha Meron labored to bring this vital ministry to reality. It is a training hospital for three nursing schools: St. Michael’s College, Lyceum Foundation of Iligan and LaSelle University, Ozamis. Mercy Mobile Clinic is a mobile healthcare clinic that travels the highways of the mountainous regions of the Philippines. Sister Rose Palacio directs the clinic that serves the poor who are ill and have no means of transportation to the city where the hospital is located. The sisters ‒ along with volunteer doctors and workers ‒ make monthly visits to the sick and dispense medications.
